The Concrete Jungle

‘New York was a city where you could be frozen to death in the midst of a busy street and nobody would notice.’ – Bob Dylan

New York is a city you could get lost in yet find yourself at the same time.

I hate crowded places but for some reason walking the streets of New York has such an exhilarating feeling.

I stayed with family friends that hosted my dad for some time and it felt like being home with my family. They were hospitable and loving.

I did a subway art tour, and then had to work my way through the world underground to find my way back to where I needed to, I was not surprised when I walked up the stairs and looked around, I was somewhere I’m sure I wasn’t meant to be. I don’t think a dodgy, smelly alley is a great idea to be walking into all alone.

The subway is exactly as one would imagine, overcrowded and interesting but also exciting, once you teach yourself to ignore the many smells surrounding you, if you pay attention to the people you will begin to understand them, an ederly woman slouching on a bench and a young man running towards the train before the door closes, both tired and in desperate need to get home to families, to friends or just to the comfort of their own homes.

I’m never afraid of getting lost, I find myself meeting interesting people and seeing exciting things, and in this case, stumbling into Central Park. When it was time to get back home, I was so ready, It was about 3 degrees Fahrenheit (-10C) my hands were close to blue from the cold, my eye’s teared and possibly came close to being frozen wide open.

New York is a dream, one day I won’t wake up and I’m okay with that.
