Alcatraz Island, which sits on the icy waters San Francisco, California, is the home of a federal prison, housing some of America’s most dangerous felons.
The prison had been in operation from 1934 to 1963. Most of us know a man who was imprisoned in The Rock (The nickname of the prison given by the prisoners). Does Al ‘Scarface’ Capone ring a bell? Not the movie, the actual man. He was one of the prisoners here.
The Rock was inescapable, may tried but failed dismally every time. After many years, in March, 21st of 1963 the prison was shut down because of high operating costs.
However, the island was still occupied for about 2 years by a group of Native-American Activists
The island is now a popular tourist destination, getting about 1 million tourists each year.
